Rising up from a hilltop overlooking the Ouachita Mountains, the new headquarters for ArcBest is a physical representation and symbol for the values of a world leader in the logistics industry. The organization needed a space to accommodate dramatic growth of a new division and the ability to attract and retain talent to Fort Smith, Arkansas.
Located on the west edge of the now developing Chafee Crossing, the 203,000 square foot ArcBest Headquarters facility joins the revival of the former Camp Chafee in rural Sebastian County, Arkansas. “This job demanded a firm with a fully integrated staff of architectural and engineering disciplines, which Cromwell has. The coordination and communication of the team throughout this project has been critical to its success.”

ArcBest was designed and constructed featuring the latest energy conserving and environmentally friendly features. From the generous views and abundant daylight and controlled LED lighting to the under-floor displacement ventilation system, the building offers all of the sustainable features and workplace friendly items that ensure productivity and employee well-being. From the beginning of the project, ArcBest’s emphasis was on ease of access, comfort, collaborative spaces and functionality. This project achieved LEED Silver certification.
This four-story building houses 100,000 SF of logistics center space including offices, training, talent management, HR functions, and a floor of corporate leadership and operations personnel. The exterior is clad in rain screen wood siding. The wood is brought into the building in several areas to make the space warm and bold. As you enter the building through the lobby, guess are greeted with a monumental staircase designed specifically to promote the healthy lifestyles of employees. The north and south facades are made of glass, allowing for natural light and dynamic views of the Ouachita Mountains.
The L-shaped office was designed to be completely flexible with modular walls and workspaces to be flexible as the company grows. And, this was put to the test during construction. ArcBest acquired businesses during the construction phase, forcing floor plans to change. With the modular walls these changes happened with minimal cost to the client.
