Cromwell was the Designer of Record for this 38,500 SF, 32-lane bowling facility and fun center with “Strike Zone” restaurant, sports bar, party and meeting facilities, arcade and support areas for the Army MWR (Morale, Welfare, Recreation). The client’s goal was to replace the existing facility with a larger facility meeting all applicable building codes and requirements. The design challenge was to specify unique, creative materials while meeting government standards and staying within a minimal budget. Throughout the design development process, all finishes and materials were submitted and approved through a stringent review process by the client and their on-staff interior designer. The Bowling Center is divided into three main areas: Bowling Lanes, Party/Meeting Room and Arcade, and “Strike Zone” Restaurant and Sports Bar.

The Bowling Center is divided into three main areas: Bowling Lanes, Party/Meeting Room and Arcade, and “Strike Zone” Restaurant and Sports Bar.
The bowling lanes encompass the majority of the facility, totaling approximately 22,000 SF. This area utilizes bold primary colors to coordinate with Bowling Worldwide, Inc.’s “Xtreme” Bowling Package to create a fun, bright atmosphere. The fluorescent accent paint, carpet, and bowling balls glow when exposed to black light. With a light show, these finishes create an intense lighting experience for “Xtreme” night bowling. All light fixtures are dually lamped with black and white lights to reduce the number of required fixtures. Dark blue walls serve as the background color throughout the lanes. Red accents were used at service areas and bright yellow emphasizes public entrances for way finding. The Control Counter is designed with bright colored custom millwork for easy identification. True saturated colors of vinyl composition tile were used to continue the color scheme in each area. The tile patterns were designed in large fields of color to contrast with the multi-colored, black light sensitive Concourse carpet. The ceiling height in the Lanes and Concourse varies from 11’ to 14’ to prevent the sense of a monolithic ceiling. Banners, changes in lighting types, and fixture direction were also used to break up the ceiling space.
