Bella Vita Hotel

Magnolia, AR

The Columbia County Jail in Magnolia, AR is a historic building designed by prominent Arkansas architect Charles Thompson in 1910 and built ca. 1930. The brick two-story structure was designed utilizing an Italian Renaissance style of architecture and is faced in yellow brick. The front entrance features three round arches that are supported by slender columns topped with stone gargoyles at the corners.

The building was still used as a jail up until 1982 when it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Cromwell is working with the building owners to design plans to renovate the jail into a boutique hotel with approximately ten guest rooms, gift shop, escape room, and open space for other possible entertainment including rooftop access for guests.

Renovation work will include:

Bringing the building up to current standards

Preservation of the building exterior’s original design elements

Designing an emergency egress route

Electrical/ mechanical systems that can accommodate the building’s low floor-to-floor clearance

This project is currently in design and is estimated to be completed in 2020.
